I love to shop. Some may even say I have an unhealthy addiction. But it seems that shopping can be more than just an obsession. Just ask Mary Lafayette, who has found success in her wardrobe styling career and gets paid -- to go shopping!

From Potential Pediatrician to Successful Stylist
Lafayette didn't always know she wanted a wardrobe styling career. In fact, she started out at St. Mary's College (Moraga, CA) working toward becoming a pediatrician. "That changed after the first few weeks of chemistry," she says with a chuckle. Always interested in journalism, she quickly switched to communications and entertained the idea of becoming an anchorwoman; however, after interning with a local news station she realized she liked doing behind-the-scenes work.

When she moved to New York in 1999, she worked both in communications and publishing. It was here that she was able to begin networking. She met a fashion stylist, who she would later call and work for as an assistant. She had a revelation. "I loved the fast pace, the shopping, the putting looks together," she says. "I knew the first day -- it was my 'Aha!' moment."

Although Lafayette used experience rather than a wardrobe styling degree, and never had specific training at any of the

, she does think that it is an important part of the process today, especially if one wants to get into sewing or tailoring or costume design. But when it comes down to it, wardrobe styling schools are "good to make you more marketable," she says.

Shopping with the Celebs
The same year, Lafayette started her wardrobe styling career, she started her own company. Fashion Luv Joenz does image consulting and wardrobe styling for various people. Fashion icons DOROTHY DANDRIDGE and DIANA ROSS have always influenced Lafayette and she draws inspiration from the fashion of artists, such as JENNIFER LOPEZ, GWEN STEFANI, and MARY J. BLIGE. Always looking at magazines and movies for the latest trends, Lafayette is constantly keeping a watchful eye on what's up-and-coming.

And the best part of all is working with celebrities. Working with the likes of Mary J. Blige, PATTI LABELLE, and USHER, Lafayette has become quite the expert at her wardrobe styling career. "I enjoy it a lot and it's so much fun," she says about working with celebrities. It can sometimes be difficult, as they tend to have certain demands, but like any other job, Lafayette says, "you just need to have good interpersonal skills and really know how to work with people."

Shopping for Wardrobe Styling Schools
According to CNN partner, CareerBuilder.com, the salary for a wardrobe styling career can range anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 a week, depending on what your job entails and your experience. But wardrobe styling schools will certainly provide the competitive edge necessary to land your dream job.

In order to succeed, Lafayette suggests wardrobe styling schools to give individuals the opportunity to perfect their craft. It is with a wardrobe styling degree that one is most likely to excel. "You have to have the skills [that make you] stand out from everyone else," she says.

For the future, Lafayette would love to have a full agency, with makeup artists, photographers, and hair stylists for artists. It seems that this wardrobe styling career woman has found her niche and will continue shopping, fulfilling a passion and what, to shopoholics, is a dream come true. So go shop around for wardrobe styling schools today!
